Biography
Cassius Van Winkle, son of James W. and Elizabeth Jane (Davis) Van Winkle, was born in Jackson County, Kentucky, in 1870. When he was a small boy, his parents moved to Madison County, settling in Berea, Kentucky. He was a devout Christian and studied for the ministry.
Cassius married Laura Kelly, daughter of Wright and Hannah (Lewis) Kelly. "Cash" was a clergyman, and he and Laura lived wherever his profession called him. In 1910, they were living with baby Ivan in Vanceburg, Kentucky. In 1920, he was a minister in Berea, Kentucky, and they had three children (Ivan 1909, Doris 1912, and Raymond 1916). The 1930 US Census shows the family back in Vanceburg, and in 1940, they were in Garrard County.
After his retirement they lived in the Berea area for a few years, then decided to spend their declining years in the Christian Home in Louisville, Kentucky. "Cash" died in 1962 and was buried in Berea, Kentucky. Laura remained in the apartment at the Christian Home in Louisville. She died in the fall of 1966 and was buried beside her husband in Berea.
